색체 마술사, ‘마르크 샤갈(Marc Chagall)’의 『다프니스와 클로에(Daphnis and Chloe)』《1961》

《마르크 샤갈(Marc Chagall)의 ‘다프니스와 클로에(Daphnis and Chloe)’의 삽화 작품들》

2~3세기에 그리스 시인 롱고스(Longus)가 지은 것으로 추정되는 『다프니스와 클로에(Daphnis and Chloe)』라는 그리스 소설에 샤갈이 관심을 갖도록 만든 사람은 분명 그리스 출신 판화 전문 출판업자 테리아드(Tériade, 본명: Stratis Eleftheriades, 1889.05.02～1983.10.23)였을 것이다.

『다프니스와 클로에(Daphnis and Chloe)』의 지은이는 말한다. "나는 어느 날 레스보스(Lesbos) 섬에서 사냥을 하다. 숲 속에서 난생 처음 보는 아름다운 광경을 목격하였다. 바로 사랑 이야기를 그린 그림이었다. 숲은 수많은 나무, 꽃, 물들로 이미 아름다웠다······. 나는 다른 것도 보았는데, 그것은 사랑의 장면이었다. 나는 너무나 깊은 감명을 받은 나머지, 이 그림이 표현한 이야기를 글로 옮겨야겠다는 결심을 했다."

여기서 나오는 이야기가 바로 다프니스(Daphnis)와 클로에(Chloe) 두 젊은이에 대한 이야기이다. 다프니스는 염소치기였고 클로에는 양치기였다. 둘은 모두 고아였다. 다프니스와 클로에는 서로 사랑하는 사이가 되지만 예상치 못한 사건들이 둘의 사랑을 방해한다. 여러 우여곡절 속에서도 결국은 서로에 대한 사랑을 지켜낸다는 것이 이 작품의 전체 줄거리이다. 소설의 마지막에는 다프니스와 클로에 모두 부모를 찾고, 둘은 마침내 결혼식을 올린다.

샤갈은 이 작품의 삽화를 그리려면 그리스를 직접 방문하여 자신이 책에서 받은 인상과 실제 그리스의 풍경을 비교해보는 과정이 필요하다고 느꼈다. 샤갈은 동판화나 흑백판화 대신 석판화를 선택해 흑백으로 삽화를 작업하였다. 그러나 그리스 풍경의 풍부한 색채감은 석판화 제작에도 영향을 주어, 몇몇 작품들에서는 초록, 노랑, 파랑, 빨강과 같은 원색이 포함되기도 하였다. 「여름철(La Saison d'été; The Summer Season, 1961)」, 「필레타스의 가르침(La Lecon de Philétas; Philetas's Lesson, 1961)」, 「다프니스를 발견한 라몬(Découverte de Daphnis par Lamon; Lamon Discovers Daphnis, 1961)」, 「클로에를 발견한 드리아스(Découverte de Chloé par Dryas; Dryas Discovers Chloe, 1961)」 등이 여기에 해당된다. 색채로 찍어낸 광범위한 부분은 식물, 꽃, 동물을 묘사하는 모티브의 발견과 등장을 표현한다.

롱고스(Longus)의 이야기는 계절의 변화와 함께 전개되고, 샤갈은 사계절의 모습을 사용하여 삽화 작업에 변화를 주었다. 가을의 색은 여름의 색과 다르게 표현되었으며, 그림은 계절의 흐름에 따른 분위기 변화를 반영하고 있다.

그러나 이야기의 배경이 그리스이고 그리스의 풍경이 샤갈에게 영감을 주었음에도 불구하고, 『다프니스와 클로에(Daphnis and Chloe)』 삽화집 속에는 가끔씩 나타나는 신전을 제외하면 그리스의 흔적을 거의 찾아볼 수 없다. 대신 배경에는 지중해(Mediterranean Sea), 팔레스타인(Palestine), 프랑스의 코트다쥐르(Cote d'Azur) 등 샤갈이 그 동안 방문했던 장소들과 정원들에 대한 기억이 총체적으로 담겨있다.
